UPDATE DEC 28, 2000
Peltier could be victim of FBI frame
TORONTO
SUN
By Peter Worthington -- Sun Media Newspapers
In a gesture unprecedented in its 79-year history,
the FBI authorized several hundred agents to march around the White House
10 days before Christmas to protest possible clemency by President Bill
Clinton for Leonard Peltier.
To some, this unusual act indicates how close Clinton
may be to granting executive clemency early in the new year -- something
he has promised to consider.
The FBI is almost pathologically determined that Peltier
never be freed and its protest underlines both the oddity of this case
and the intensity of feelings.
A Sioux-Ojibwa Indian, Peltier was sentenced to two
consecutive life sentences for the deaths of two FBI agents during violence
on South Dakota's Pine Ridge reserve.
Peltier has never denied joining the firefight that
erupted June 26, 1975, but denies killing agents Ron Williams and Jack
Coler at point blank range.
I've fretted about the case ever since it turned out
Peltier was extradited from Canada on the basis of perjured affidavits
by Myrtle Poor Bear, claiming she was Peltier's girlfriend and had witnessed
him kill the agents.
In fact, she didn't know Peltier, had seen nothing
and had never been to the area. Three contradictory affidavits were composed
by the FBI and dictated to Poor Bear under threats of vengeance.
The deeper one probes into the case, the more it seems
the FBI framed Peltier and withheld evidence....READ

Oneidas' claim still unsettled
Syracuse
At the beginning of the year 2000, a Post-Standard
headline asked, "This land is whose land?"
At the end of the year, the question goes unanswered.
Twelve more months have not produced a settlement
to the Oneida Indian Nation's 30-year-old lawsuit, which stakes claim to
250,000 acres in Madison and Oneida counties.
At the start of 2000, Oneida County Executive Ralph
Eannace said the largest issues remained unresolved after 10 months of
intense mediation.

Modern `wisdom' catches up to age-old Indian

DULUTH
NEWS
I read in the newspaper a
few days ago that religious leaders are worried because the world is being
choked off by pollution, acid rain, depletion of our natural resources,
etc., and they have gotten together to make sure that something is done
about it before it is too late....
...Kudos to those religious
leaders who have taken the initiative to go so far as to bring this up.
Finally someone is listening!
Indian spiritual men -- our
religious leaders -- have been talking about this for centuries, but no
one has listened to their pleas. Indians have warned of the destruction
of the world through prophecies, visions, presentations, etc. Some of our
spiritual leaders, elders and medicine men have testified to the United
Nations that our world's natural resources that provide food, water and
oxygen to the world's people are being severely damaged by the pollution
of and destruction of the rain forests and water supplies...READ

Deposits of ore, danger: Tribe seeks redress of illnesses

AK SPRINGS, Ariz. - On sandstone-layered hills overlooking
this Navajo community in northeast Arizona, chunks of blown-apart rock
cover the ground and shelter the small lizards hiding from hawks in the
desert sky.
Below the hills are Navajo
homes made of the same rocks, but all the homes are abandoned. The Navajo
call these structures ''uranium homes,'' because they are made of uranium-ore

New Century, Same as the Old Century: The Ten Worst
Corporations of 2000
CORP FOCUS
Self-regulation is all the rage in Washington, D.C.
these days.
Responsible corporations, perhaps working in conjunction
with government, can band together to devise standards of ethical conduct
that will protect people and the planet, without unnecessary costs -- that's
the line among a wide array of beltway players. And with Christine Todd
Whitman anointed to head up the Environmental Protection Agency, it's going
to become even more faddish.
There's one problem with the self-regulation theory:
it doesn't work....

Election time is correction time
ICT
The U.S. Supreme Court fell back on one of its oldest
Indian tricks when it ruled that the Florida election results were flawed
and unreliable - but too bad, the damage has been done and no time to fix
it now, not if the timetable for the Electoral College is going to be met.
In other words, legally we would like to count your
vote, but politically we just do not have the time.
In Indian Country, we know all about court-acknowledged
wrongs without a remedy. The Black Hills were found in court to have been
taken from us in violation of every national law or treaty ever drafted,
but they couldn¹t be given back because too much time has passed.
Numerous
tribes have been deprived of lawfully protected water
rights, only to find in court that it would be too complex and costly to
determine any compensation for lost resources....READ

.
1835: 2nd SEMINOLE War: Wiley Thompson, SEMINOLE Agent,
Lt.Constantine Smyth, and Erastus Rogers, are killed
by anti-removal SEMINOLEs at Fort King, near present day Ocala in the northcentral
part of Florida. Major Francis L.Dade's company of troops are marching
from Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay, to Fort King. Near the Little Withlacoochee
River, near present day Bushnell.
They will be attacked by 180 SEMINOLEs. Of a total
of 112 soldiers, only 3 will survive. Chief Micanopy is credited by many
as firing the first shot which killed Major Dade. Chief Jumper killed Dade's
adjutant. Only 3 SEMINOLEs will be killed. Osceola led the SEMINOLEs on
several skirmishes this day. Today will be considered the start of the
Second SEMINOLE War by the U.S. Army.

1874: Captain A.S.B.Keyes, and troop I, Tenth Cavalry,
have been following a group of Southern Cheyenne for 80 miles. Today, on
the Canadian River, in Texas, the entire group of 52 Indians, and 70 horses,
surrenders, according to Army records.
.
.1890 As the leader of the Miniconjou
band massacred at
Wounded Knee Creek on December 29, 1890,
Big Foot
haunts the history of the American West, an image of
brutal death "drawn," as N. Scott Momaday has
written, "in ancient light."
Big Foot and his people lived on the Cheyenne
River Reservation
in present-day South Dakota and were
among the most enthusiastic believers in the Ghost
Dance ceremony when it arrived among the Lakota in
the spring of 1890. The hunger and misery that had
followed the final break-up of their great reservation in
1889 made the Lakota keenly receptive to the Ghost
Dance message of messianic renewal, and the
movement swept rapidly through their encampments,
causing local Indian Agents to react with alarm. Some
effectively suppressed the dancers, others called for
troops to restore order.
At the Standing Rock reservation, where Sitting
Bull
was suspected of encouraging the Ghost Dance in order
to provoke an uprising, the crisis led to bloodshed when
Indian police sent to arrest the aging holy man killed
him in a confrontation with his followers. Fearful of
reprisals, many from Sitting Bull's band fled south,
where they found a haven with Big Foot.
Big Foot decided to lead his people away from the
possibility of further violence at neighboring Standing
Rock and headed farther south toward the reservation
at Pine Ridge, hoping to find safety there. Increasingly
ill with pneumonia, he had no intention of fighting and
was flying a white flag when soldiers patrolling for
roving bands caught up with him on December 28,
1890. That night Big Foot and his people camped near
Wounded
Knee Creek, surrounded on all sides by
soldiers...excerpted from HERE
